FAQs About
OCD Therapy
What is Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)?
OCD is a mental health condition characterised by persistent, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviours or rituals (compulsions). It can interfere with daily life, relationships, and overall well-being.
What are obsessions and compulsions?
- Obsessions are unwanted, distressing thoughts, images, or urges that cause anxiety. Examples include fears of contamination, harming others, or needing things to be symmetrical.
- Compulsions are repetitive behaviours or mental acts performed to relieve anxiety caused by obsessions. Examples include excessive handwashing, checking locks repeatedly, or counting in a specific way.
What are the signs and symptoms of OCD?
OCD symptoms vary but often include:
- Intrusive and distressing thoughts that won’t go away
- Engaging in repetitive behaviours or rituals
- Feeling a strong need to perform actions to “prevent” bad outcomes
- Spending excessive time on compulsions, affecting daily life
Can OCD be cured?
OCD cannot be permanently cured, but it can be effectively managed with therapy. Exposure & Response Prevention (ERP) therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) are proven treatments that help reduce symptoms and improve quality of life.
How long does treatment take?
OCD treatment varies based on severity and response to therapy. Many individuals see improvement within 4-8 weeks of structured therapy, but long-term management may be needed. A personalised approach ensures sustainable progress.
